Book Review: Masked Hearts Anthology

What secrets do the Masked Hearts hold?

Dragons, elves and shifters abound in these five sweet, romantic fantasy tales. But, no matter the realm of origin or the race of the species, one theme resonates throughout. To find a love that’s lasting, one must be willing to take off the mask, and reveal their true heart.

Affinity by Dana Wright
Water Woman by Claire Davon
Feather Fall by Sheryl Winters
Duty or Desire by Sharon Hughson
Dragon Law by Nemma Wollenfang

Overall, this is a good collection of stories. All the authors have creative, interesting, and unique voices and tales. I'd consider this group of stories to be primarily fantasy with romantic elements. I won't describe each story individually but I was more entertained towards the beginning and end of the book for some reason. Maybe the stories intrigued me more, I'm not completely sure because I read each story.

A few of the stories were great and made me want to read more but there were a few where it just didn't hit the mark for me. It wasn't bad, it just didn't hold my interest as much as the others. I wasn't able to delve into their world as easily or as well as I'd like.

The pacing for some of the stories lacked for me. Perhaps it was the limited word count but I did not like where some of the stories ended. Also, how or where they time skipped bothered me too since it felt abrupt, not in the feeling that I wanted more at the end (some of them I did), but I felt like the author could have landed in a better spot in the story than where they landed. Lastly, I feel the editing for some stories could have been slightly better, I don't feel the writing was as polished as they could have been and could have made a bit of difference if corrected.

Overall, a nice collection of stories that will keep you entertained but it's a hit or miss depending how you like your stories. If you love fantasy and mythical creatures, I don't think you can go wrong here.

3.3 out of 5 rating for me.
