Review

MINOR SPOILERS
I enjoyed the idea of near immortality for an entire country but one girl is mortal and struggles to hide it. The story concept is fantastic and I enjoyed how the author built the world but there are a few things that I feel were confusing. However, they were mostly minor things and I didn't have a problem reading on without those things addressed.

The writing is done well, I easily found myself immersed in the author's writing, however, I couldn't connect to the story for the later two halves of the book. I just didn't care as much about the characters or perhaps the stakes weren't good enough for me to care about what happened to the characters. The story plateaued, especially towards the end and I wondered why does this part of the story matter? I know it was important but I found it too easy for them and would like to have seen them struggle more. Also I feel that the pacing slowed down from the first third of the book so it made it more difficult to care about the characters or the story. Still, the author's writing was good that I kept reading hoping the story would get better.

That said, I do like the characters well enough but I'm not sure if they would be memorable or my favorite. I do like Michael a lot but the chemistry between him and Ava were tough for me to believe. Ava, the protagonist is fine but I can't help but feel like she's a bit of a Mary Sue and I wanted to like her more than I did. I found her disappearing parents random and frustrating. It made little sense to me why they just up and left their only daughter but I guess we'd find out more about them in the sequel. It confused me why they'd abandon her after they lost their son.

Overall, the story is interesting with the idea of everyone could die multiple times and live but the protagonist can only live once. It's a tough world where life is taken for granted and it's a theme in the book which I'd like to see more of in the future. Love the idea of the book but I'm not sure the execution was as good as it could have been. Still it's a good read if you like dystopian and futuristic worlds with romance and some adventure.

3 out of 5 for me!
