Book Review: Fractured Legacy (free for limited time) + Beyond the Divide

Beyond the Divide (Fractured Legacy #2)

Despite unanswered questions about the nameless entity that tried to steal her life, Kaylyn returns to the only kind of normal life she knows and takes on a new paranormal case.
After investing everything they have in a farm, an unsuspecting family discovers that their problems run much deeper than the poor upkeep of the house and land. Can Kaylyn and the other investigators uncover what's behind the growing malicious activity? And how will they all deal with new warnings from beyond the divide?

This story starts off about a week after the end of the first book. A perfect spot to continue and Ms Callahan does a good job at refreshing the reader as she carried on with the story.

The characters have matured a little or have learned to deal with their issues in their own ways. I like how Kaylyn attempts to improve herself but I also wish she would do it for herself and not because she felt responsible and owed that person but I could understand the situation too. I felt sympathetic for Cole in this sequel. She had a lot thrown at her and others were not always exactly helpful or observant of her needs. Jonah was sort of in and out of commission during this story. It was kind of funny how much of a workaholic he is but it's also endearing, I would have missed him if he wasn't there.  I really liked the new character, Leon, I sort of wished he had been there from the beginning. I have a little feeling I know what will happen to him and a certain person but for now I'll keep that to myself.

The introduction of the Council was handled well but it felt like they appeared once then disappeared, it was the same with Kaylyn's ex-boyfriends. This was a little confusing because I thought they would be important later in the book but it might be later in the series.

I liked that the story felt a little more complex. In the previous story it seemed to have one main plot with maybe a subplot or two. This time they had two main plots with several subplots in the story to make it more interesting. The writing is still consistently decent in its writing and I still found myself enthralled by the entire story.

I still would consider this story paranormal/mystery based on the majority of problems the characters deal with during the story. Again, the story is still a little slow to me but I believe that the story will unfold more as you read. Unfortunately, for an adrenaline junkie like me, I like having a thrill when I finish a book and I don't feel like I get it when I finished these books. It's a satisfying end but doesn't leave you with a cliffhanger. Still, it's a highly entertaining read and left me with some chills as I felt myself wanting to glance over my shoulder as I read when the characters encountered the paranormal entities.

Again, this is a highly recommended sequel. If you enjoyed the first book, you'll love the second book! I'm looking forward to seeing where Ms. Callahan will take us in the future stories!

Fractured Legacy

Kaylyn Anderson’s fascination with abandoned places and dark creatures kindled her work as a paranormal investigator. But when dreams begin to distort reality, she questions what is real and pulls away from everyone she trusts. The opportunity to investigate the Teague Hotel–a long-abandoned landmark that has always piqued her curiosity–provides a chance to redeem herself. Unraveling the hotel’s secrets won’t be easy, but Kaylyn soon finds herself the target of a dark entity that has been trapped in the building for decades.
If Kaylyn stands any hope of defeating the spirit, she’ll have to accept that her fears are real and convince fellow investigators that she hasn’t lost her mind.

The story started off decently from the main character's point of view and then we jump right into the action. Kaylyn, the protagonist, is a dysfunctional character but understandably so which makes her relatable. I enjoyed all the characters I encountered, especially Jonah who was a resolute and steadfast character, even when it wasn't deserved which I loved about him. I felt the same with Cole, she was an excellent sister but not too perfect. I like that despite clashing personalities they all learned to get along with each other. I'd personally would like to see more individual character depth with the characters as we go on.

I felt that the story was a little slow in its pace to be considered thriller for me. It was definitely more paranormal, mystery, with a dash of horror. I didn't find myself bored at all, in fact, I found myself hitting the climax of the story quicker than I anticipated which is always a good thing. It actually helped cheer up my day as I was only planning on reading a little because I was tired but ended up having to finish it because I was so involved.

The writing was good and I enjoyed the story. It was an enticing read and the climax had me riveted until I finished the book. While I don't feel that the character's developed much, they did learn some surprising things which is later discussed in the sequel. You'll just have to read it to find out! It's free for a limited time so grab it now! *points above*

Overall, a good start to a paranormal investigator series! Highly recommended if you like paranormal situations mixed with mystery!
